Design City Melbourne (Interior Angles)

Those who shaped the city

Melbourne has long been known as Australia's architecture capital. Sydney has the Utzon's Opera House and Harry Seidler, but without Sydney's spectacular natural surrounds, Melbourne has developed a greater depth in it's built environment and has always been home to the country's leading and most innovative designers exporting their talents to other capitals.

A sampling of key architectural practitioners whose influences helped shaped Melbourne include :

Georgian / Colonial era
John Gill and Leonard Terry

Victorian era
William Pitt, J.J. Clark, William Wardell, Henry Bastow, Charles Webb and Joseph Reed

Edwardian era
Nahum Barnet, Charles D'Ebro, G.B.H Austin and Henry Kemp

Interwar period
Marcus Barlow, Harry Tompkins, A & K Henderson and Harry Norris

The Fifties, Sixties and Seventies
Bates, Smart & McCutcheon and Yuncken Freeman

and more recently
the Denton Corker Marshall (DCM) practice and Nonda Katsalidis.
