Notable features

a fine example of Collegiate Gothic architecture and as the work of Edwin Evan Smith. Collegiate Gothic architecture was common in educational architecture in the United States at the time of the construction of Melbourne High School. Around the same time, Smith had also employed the style in the Old Geology (1928) and Botany (1926) buildings at the University of Melbourne. The choice of a style with university and overseas associations indicates the importance accorded to the Melbourne High School, in a manifest effort to emphasise the schools elite role.
