Built in the Victorian period in the Queen Anne style

Notable features

Queen Anne styled roofline with gables and prominent pediments. Massive structure with vertical emphasis and cornices to break up mass.

The worlds 3rd tallest building in 1889, one of the few examples of the short-lived Queen Anne style applied to a Victorian skyscraper.

The treatment to rooftop levels and clever treatment of mass seems to anticipate the skyscraper race of New York & Chicago.

History

Architect: Henry Kemp

This building has been destroyed (1980)

The building was replaced by a 4 storey retail store in the 1980s, and the APA became nothing but an urban myth ....

(A small portion of the building facade to the 6th level remains attached to the neighbouring building on Elizabeth Street)
