Notable features

This is one of Melbournes exceptional collection of public buildings and forms a closely related group with the neighbouring Law Courts. It is a fine example of the Public Works Departments (PWD) work during the 1880s and 1890s. The form and composition are typical of the principal public buildings erected in Victoria at that time, however the stone facades and elaborate roof gable motif are unusual and give this particular example extra quality and significance. The interior hall is a notable space with fine quality finishes.
