Built in the Victorian period in the Academic Classical style
Notable featuresThe original iron shed was replaced in 1872-73 by the present conservative Classical style two storey brick and cement render structure, designed by architect William Ellerker. The Victorian Horticultural Society extended the building by one nearly identical bay in 1878 to create an asymmetrical facade. The building, with unusual classically derived elements in the facade composition is a significant illustration of transitional architectural style in Melbourne in the 1870s. The asymmetrical facade with the dominant segmental bow pediment is of great interest. HistoryArchitect: William Ellerker
