Notable featuresA beautiful and eclectic combination of the French Second Empire style with mannerist and baroque detail. A highly decorative mansard roof, complete with prominent chimneys and pediments, the original design featured an unusual large corner mansard spire (which was removed in the 1950s). The building was heavy in ornament, and featured several highly detailed statues, including a statue of Queen Victoria herself on the very important corner. This building contained the Queens Walk arcade, which connected Swanston street to Collins Street. HistoryArchitect: David Wormal
This building has been destroyed (1965)
The building was demolished by the Melbourne City Council in the 1970s to make way for a new City Square. The square site has never adopted by Melburnians, and the demolished buildings on the site, including this one, were sadly lost.
