Notable featuresFollowing a two stage international design competition, Denton Corker Marshall was selected to design the new Melbourne Museum at a project cost of $250 million. The existing 70s extensions to the Exhibition building were demolished to make way for the new building. The brief called for a modern building and underground carpark to contrast with the Royal Exhibition Building and have as little impact on the gardens setting as possible. A massive building incopating the Melbourne IMAX, Melbourne Museum and Childrens Museum, this building features large wings that project from a grid of steel, and a large glass frontage. The main fin is a glass enclosure which houses a rainforest. The building is a layered composition, which makes use of a variety of contrasting sculptural and geometric forms. A memorable architectural experience. HistoryArchitect: Denton Corker Marshall
