Stonington mansion in Toorak was built as a private residence for John Wagner, who was a partner in Cobb and Co coaches. Designed by Charles DEbro, the building is a mixture of French Second Empire, Renaissance Revival and Dutch Mannerist influences. Stonington was the Vice-Regal residence for the Governor-General between 1901 and the 1930s and renamed Stonnington. The Stonington mansion has since been used primarily for education, becoming a teachers college. The name of the mansion has returned to its original spelling.
