Just happened upon a J.T.Collins photograph of this magnificent mansion in Adelaide and did a bit of quick research to get some background on it.

"Tranmere House" dates to around 1898 and was built for businessman George Hunt, apparently for his retirement. The house originally stood within 150 acres of grounds. Hunt died in 1911 and the property was inevitably subdivided and the mansion sold. For some time the house served as apartments for "distinguished gentlemen", an appropriate class of tenant for such a beautiful house.

It returned to ownership as a residential property in 1981. The current owners purchased the house in 1998. The house is on the State Heritage register.

Here it is in 1910:

Here's the shot Collins took of it in 1965:

Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think Melbourne has anything quite like that.

I'm with you Highriser... Seems to surpass (almost)...incase I've missed something, all that Melbourne has to offer
in the way of mansions/stately homes... I challenge anyone to find anything grander in Melbourne (And I have a three page
list...).

Only thing I'm not too keen on is the 'half-arsed' symmetry... Well at least the architectural difference in the domes.

Could that partly be because it's built with Mt Gambier stone, which gives it a different look?

Drove pass Tranmere House today and was surprised by its general deteriorated condition.

Window panes missing in the dormer windows, window frames badly needing repainting, green mould and flaking paint everywhere.

Gutters missing on the dome.

Beaten up gates are chained shut and while there I saw family members enter the property by opening the combination lock on the chain and then re-chaining the gate once they had entered.

The property was surrounded by a somewhat dilapidated 7 foot high brush fence which was topped with barbed wire (which had been breached in places). Can't image the family like living like this, barricaded inside.
