The former Age site is to undergo a massive development in 2 stages, with the retention of a building on Lonsdale Street and the main Age building facing Spencer Street to be demolished.

Information thanks to Archi from OzScrapers:

Stage 1 of The Age redevelopment on Spencer Street:

Features two residential towers, Australis 52-storeys and Hemisphere 40-storeys.

The next Stage will feature another 50-storey+ tower, probably office.

Thank God for that. I am of the opinion that anything is better than what currently stands there now. One of the worst buildings in Melbourne IMO.

Thanks for the scoop Collector.

Gotta love the facadism there.

I don't understand how in one development they knock down significant buildings. In another they keep ordinary ones ... doesn't seem to be any logic to it really.

I don't know, but keeping heritage facades on modern buildings often look tacky, whereas this one reuses the structure, but has severely modified it I believe.

By the way, is that the old stock exchange on the rightmost of the rightmost pic?

^^ There's no pic of the old Stock Exchange as far as I can tell (all the old stock Exchanges were in Collins Street).

The retained building is a 98-year-old red brick warehouse at 612 Lonsdale Street, once occupied by refrigeration engineer Reidy's.

A bit more news on stage 1...........

The joint venture owners of the site, ASX-listed giant Industry Superannuation Property Trust and Perth-based developer Axiom Properties Limited, are proposing two high-rise apartment towers: a 51-level, 476-unit building to be known as the Australis Tower on Lonsdale Street; and a 39-level, 272-unit building to be known as Hemisphere Tower, on Little Lonsdale Street.

The proposal will include widening two laneways, Alston and Merriman lanes, to incorporate about 1500 square metres of retail space for cafes, restaurants and shops.

Architects: Hassell

Good news in that we are talking quality architecture and good use of a very charming old warehouse. :D

I'll reserve judgement.

Renders are just renders and I can't see much there but the standard high-tech spin.

Anyone remember how fantastic the Melbourne Central "bubbles" looked in the renders ?
What turned out was a couple of dirt filled silicon breast implants stuck to the side of an overpass.
