Agree that Shaun Carney's article is mostly good but he should have paid more attention to ther shameless role of the City of Melbourne in not defending a building with a rating of B on their own Planning Scheme and Heritage overlay.

I agree, hopefully there will be a few more letters published. I was glad that he touched upon the fact that preserving heritage is not just about keeping a few key standout examples but preserving the look of a city.

Dont think it was Madden alone - after all only Brumby got quoted in the Age. And nice to see ed op piece the next day noting the flaws in the justification - lane widening and access to QV not good enough ! Even though the developers may have said that this part was vital to the success of the project, it was only a small corner - really they could have kept the facade, still had their three levels of shopping centre between the Myer facades, and had a new entrance through Lonsdale House, and still get a tidy return. Demolishing Lonsdale House was just the icing on the cake for them surely.

wonder how many of those there are ....

especially considering how long its been since a proper heritage study was undertaken.

if you were a developer, you'd almost be licking your lips trying to find them all and simply push for a meeting with the fatcats.

would anyone be interested in being part of/organising a small memorial protest about the demolition?

I doubt we can stop it now but need to build awareness for future buildings..

I am very disappointed in the state government that such a decision could have been made.
