Absolutely disgraceful.

Wonder if they thought that any fine would be outweigh the hassle and expense of incorporating a heritage property into their new building.

Does anyone know what the new building was to look like and how they were going to incorporate the pub? I'm guessing that it would have been similar to the nasty apartments which surround it complete with a a poor example of facadism.

Given the widespread outrage, perhaps it makes a few more people think about heritage in our city.

Given the relative inadequacy of the maximum fine that can be imposed, the developers can just write it off as another expense. Ideally, the penalty should be a prohibition from ever building on the site.

Who can forget the illegal half demolition of the church at the corner of Toorak and Williams Road where a developer began demolition without approval and the half demolished church sat there for years. But guess what ended up being built on the site? Apartments, and the church was completely demolished. Corner of Punt Road Road and Commercial Road, a new building breached height limits. The developer paid a pittance of a fine.

Probably a tax deductible expense.
