Seems that every time I go for a wander around the Broadway / Canal area of Elwood I see more large cracks appearing in the facades of many of the older homes down there and more bracing supports being put in place as owners try to stop the decay. I suppose the problem can be traced to the fact that all those properties were built on reclaimed swamp land. What is amazing, however, is that they've managed to stay up for so long. I can remember, one particular pair of duplex dwellings which, after having undergone a lot of repair work, finally had to be demolished because they had become structurally so unsound.
