The bluestone Italianate Victorian mansion was built in the 1870's and the entry and the four formal rooms on the ground floor are very special however the rest of the house has been "got at" by various owners with beige painted walls, plain bedrooms with modern lights and plaster, 4 small bathrooms and a mismatch of carpets everywhere.

Depending how you see things the property is either 4,508sqm or 6,670sqm - it depends if you count the easement down pass the neighbours to the bore (land which the neighbours appear to have consumed).

The new extension of the kitchen/familyroom sticks out like a sore thumb especially as the windows of this extension are plastic.

The current owner purchased the property in October 2001 for $1.45m and is currently asking for $5.8m - $6.2m (IMHO almost double the $3.5m it should be) but as far as Adelaide's property market is concerned if you don't ask you don't know what you may get.

The original single storey house was built by William Bickford, a chemist, in 1844.

Then in the 1870's Thomas Graves, a grocer from Hindley Street who made his fortune by exporting goods to Melbourne during the gold rush, added the second storey and the ornate fixtures.

In 1924 the property was subdivided into 39 housing allotments leaving Benacre House on 7 acres of land then in 1950 and again in 1970 the remaining land surrounding Benacre was further subdivided leaving Benacre House on its current alotment with 5 car garage and pool.
