I am fascinated by some of the "Coffee Palaces" or "Temperance Hotels" built in Melbourne in the 1880s ... one of the best collections that there was with only a handful left.

I am hoping that someone has some more detail on some of these massive buildings ...

Melbourne Coffee Palace (demolished in 50s)

Federal Coffee Palace - grand mother of them all... touted to be converted into a casino before eventual demolition in the 1970s.

Hawthorn Coffee Palace (know almost nothing about this one) ...

Collingwood Coffee Palace (ditto)

St Kilda Coffee Palace (one of few that still exists - albeit not as spectacular as many that don't)

Junction Hotel St Kilda (demolished in 60s)

Grand Hotel Spring Street (now Windsor still exists as a 5 star hotel - probably Melbourne's grandest survivor)

Burke & Wills Hotel & Coffee Palace Collins Street

Dear Mr Pitt ,

Cuppla' books you may care to read at your "Lee - zure" ( as our septic chum - ohs would say ! ) ...... Michael Cannon's "The Land Boomers"and Gillian Upton's "The George" ( a history of St.Kilda's infamous 19th century pub) .

Lots of chit chat in both tomes ( particularly in the former one ) about the whole coffee palace movement . Not sure , but I THINK it was mainly a creation of the Scottish elders of the Presbyterian church such as James Munro .

Again , "As I understand"..... they did a roaring trade for many years - providing comfortable , "Family Style" accommodation . Most of them are , sadly , long 'gawn ... but I think the East Melbourne Palace which was in one of those streets of Clarendon Street may still be standing .

Good luck

Bea -cheye , Blee - cheye ( Beachy Bleechy)

Also the Biltmore (formerly Bretmore) in Albert Park, one of few that still exist and has recently been restored by the City of Port Phillip as apartments

The Victoria Coffee Palace, Collins Street.
Now demolished.

On Bourke Street, The Melbourne Coffee Palace and Parer's Crystal Cafe in their heyday.
Now both demolished.

Parer's Crystal Cafe, Bourke Street at its best.

Queens Coffee Palace once stood at the north-west corner of Victoria and Rathdowne Streets in Carlton.

Anyone notice there's a coffee shop in the redeveloped GPO called the Federal Coffee Palace?
