Colonial Georgian/Regency

Buildings from the early days of colonial settlement in Australia demonstrated restrained ornament without visual pretention.

The Georgian style, a branch of Renaissance architecture with roots in Imperial Rome seemed a simple expression of proportion suitable for early settlement.

Being a young settlement and late starter, Melbourne has far fewer Colonial Georgian and Regency buildings than Sydney.

Some rare examples of Victorian Regency do exist however, and among them is Royal Terrace on Nicholson Street.
