Walking Melbourne

The 20th Century modern style evolved from the Internationalist and modern styles of the 60s to become an expression of high technology in the 1980s, 1990s and now onwards of 2000.

The modern style lost favour briefly in the 1990s as Post-modernism rejected the stark ideals of the modern style. It has been revived in the form of stunning glass, steel and concrete expression, using a variety of geometrical forms and space frames for further complexity than the standard modern style.

Modern is a style that gripped Melbourne in the years following the 1956 Olympics as the city struggled to reinvent its ageing image. As a result, classics like BHP house on Bourke Street and the Royal Insurance Group and Rialto Towers on Collins Street stand like sentinels to a new era of architecture in Melbourne.
